I used to get lost a lot, especially driving in new areas. A few years ago I took a wrong turn in lower Manhattan and found myself hopelessly touring Brooklyn (New Yorkers will know that's no easy feat!). I used every driving skill in my auto survival arsenal to make a simple U-turn. My street map proved useless. The verbal directions from thick “Naw Yawka” accents confused me. I eventually dodged Brooklyn but not without a bruised ego, frayed nerves and exhausted patience. But that was so "yesterday." I don’t get lost anymore. Not since I started renting cars with a GPS. Global Positioning Systems are like an inner AAA-approved conscience, gently informing me of my next turn. The GPS effortlessly leads me to the hotel, to dinner or even a movie. It doesn’t even throw a fit when I accidentally or intentionally veer off course. It’s a guide and guard. I just can’t turn the radio up too loud or it drowns out the voice.
God is like that, too, except much better. Scripture defines Him as Sovereign, meaning He’s in total control. God is All-Powerful. All-Knowing. And Everywhere. He knows the past, present and future. That's why He’s the Ultimate GPS. Great. Powerful. Sovereign. God is always leading us home. That’s His Desire and Design for His Creation. No matter our left turns, detours and lane changes in life, God works His way and gently reveals the Path back to those listening (“with our own ears”).
Face it, it’s no fun being lost in Brooklyn. It’s even worse to be lost in life. We all just want to get home. Give me a GPS. Give me God.
NOTABLE QUOTABLES ON GOD’S SOVEREIGNTY:
A "god' whose will is resisted, whose designs are frustrated, whose purpose is checkmated, possesses no title to Deity, and so far from being a fit object of worship, merits nought but contempt. --A.W. Pink
No doubt all history in the last resort must be held by Christians to be a story with a divine plot. --C.S. Lewis
Man is a responsible moral agent, though he is also divinely controlled; man is divinely controlled, though he is also a responsible moral agent. --J.I. Packer
...there is no foundation for comfort in the enjoyments of this life, but in the assurance that a wise and good God governeth the world... --Wiliam Law
When you come to knowing God, the initiative lies on His side. If He does not show Himself, nothing you can do will enable you to find Him. --C.S. Lewis
I have lived a long time, sir, and the longer I live the more convincing proofs I see of this truth - that God governs in the affairs of men. --Benjamin Franklin
Father, only a fool would deny You are in Control. You truly are Great and Good and God. Thank You for creating us, loving us and saving us. We simply ask this day to hear and see You. Show us your Power through Nature. Show us your Purpose through Circumstance. Show us your Provision through Blessing. Amen.
