The Secret Secret

“The LORD confides in those who fear him; he makes his covenant known to them. My eyes are ever on the LORD, for only he will release my feet from the snare.” (Psalm 25:14-15)

Everybody has secrets. Deep, dark secrets. Secrets that haunt. Secrets that hurt. Secrets that harass. One of the most fascinating (and creepy) websites is www.postsecret.com (an online confessional of postcards revealing hurts, fears, anxieties and regrets). No secret is too tame or tawdry at Post-Secret. The dirty laundry is hung freely and the stains of regret, remorse and repression are clearly evident.

God has a secret, too. But unlike man’s secrets that snag and snare, God’s secret sets captors free. The psalmist adds a confidential caveat, however: only those who fear can hear. God doesn’t openly post His Divine Secret. It’s only for those who hunger to connect with a God that evaporates human fear. We were divinely designed for a covenantal relationship with the Creator. Because of Jesus, we are His Cleansed Children. We are His Forgiven Friends. We are His Holy Heirs.

Now, that’s a secret worth sharing.

NOTABLE QUOTABLES ON SECRETS:

You know there are no secrets in America. It's quite different in England, where people think of a secret as a shared relation between two people. --W. H. Auden

To know that one has a secret is to know half the secret itself. --Henry Ward Beecher

A man's most open actions have a secret side to them. --Joseph Conrad

A wonderful fact to reflect upon, that every human creature is constituted to be that profound secret and mystery to every other. ---Charles Dickens

Three can keep a secret if two are dead. --Benjamin Franklin

Father, You know that we have our secrets. We harbor them in our hearts and build walls to hold them within. You know our secret regrets and the fears they produce. You know our secret acts and the consequences they birth. Jesus, we thank You for breaking down the walls so we might walk in Friendship with the Father. May we this day travel unashamed and free. Amen.
