Where's Your Confidence?

"So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.” (Hebrews 10:35-36)

Confidence is a funny thing and a fine line. Confidence can easily become cockiness. Most of us walk with wounded egos in life. Like Humpty-Dumpty, the falls in life have fractured our self-worth and cracked our confidence. But here’s the rub. Where is your confidence? If it’s in your own ability, aspirations or assets, you’re walking as egg shells. Thankfully, the Hebrew writer suggests a greater confidence exists for those who put their faith in God. It’s a confidence in a Power greater than ourselves. If we do that, we’ll be “richly rewarded.”

If you’ve ever flown on an airplane you understand this type of confidence. It's not something we really think about, but it's a fairly irrational idea that a hunk of metal, several tons heavy, could somehow find flight. The Law of Gravity states heavy stuff will naturally fall. An airplane, on its own, doesn’t fly. If your confidence is in nuts and bolts, steel and size, you’re in trouble.

But a flier’s confidence is in a different set of Laws at work. We honor principles where speed and wind create lift and separation. Our confidence resides in something that's much more powerful than we can possibly imagine to soar us into the stratosphere, screaming at over 500 mph, and safely land hundreds or thousands of miles away. We are “richly rewarded” by this quicker travel. What might take days in a car can be covered in mere hours.

So where is your confidence today? Is it grounded in fear or frustration? Are you tied to the tarmac waiting for God to work? Or is your Confidence in something grander than you or even your imagination? Are you confident that you’ll eventually take flight. Faith in God makes the impossible happen. And that’s when things really fly.

**Ding** You’re now free to move around the Kingdom.

NOTABLE QUOTABLES ON CONFIDENCE:

Ambrose Redmoon:
Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear.

Stewart E. White:
Do not attempt to do a thing unless you are sure of yourself; but do not relinquish it simply because someone else is not sure of you.

Richard L. Evans:
Don't let life discourage you; everyone who got where he is had to begin where he was.

Emile Coue:
Every day, in every way, I am getting better and better.

Ralph Waldo Emerson:
Every man has his own courage, and is betrayed because he seeks in himself the courage of other people.

Father, we thank you for this Confident Faith we can have in You. When we trust You, we know that mountains can move and miracles can happen. We are grateful that you care for us, Jesus. We praise you for Your Mighty Works that proclaim a better path if we only choose to believe. Help us believe today. And help our unbelief, too. Amen.
